The Ātaahua Community Trust has been establised for these purposes (its mission):
(a) Managing, maintaining and improving the Kaituna Hall and the Ātaahua Domain in partnership with the Christchurch City Council;
(b) Supporting and organising events and activities to foster the community spirit of the Ātaahua Region;
(c) Maintaining and enhancing the natural environment of the Ātaahua Region;
(d) Maintaining and protecting the historic and cultural heritage of the Ātaahua Region; and
(e) Doing all or any such other matters and services as necessary, incidental or conducive to achieving the above stated Purposes
These purposes do not extend to any matter or thing which is not charitable within the meaning of the Charities Act 2005 or any subsequent enactment. They will be carried out within the Ātaahua region, Banks Peninsula, New Zealand.

The Kaituna Hall and Ātaahua Domain, at 2531 Christchurch Akaroa Road, Ātaahua, Banks Peninsula share a rich and intertwined history. Originally established as the Ātaahua School, the building was later relocated to the site where the Kaituna Hall stands today. The school operated there until its closure in 1931, after which the building was repurposed and officially opened as the Kaituna Hall in 1938.
To oversee the surrounding area, the Ātaahua Domain Board was formed in 1935, while a separate Hall Committee managed the hall itself. These two committees operated independently until 1978, when they merged to become the Ātaahua Reserve Board. The Ātaahua Reserve Board managed the hall and the domain until it was formally gazetted as a Recreation Reserve in 1983 by the Wairewa County Council who then took over management of it.
In 2006, the Ātaahua Reserve Management Committee, an elected body under the Banks Peninsula District Council, created a Reserve Management Plan.
In 2011, the Christchurch City Council assumed responsibility for maintaining the Ātaahua Domain, and in 2024 the Council also took over the management of the Kaituna Hall.
Establishing this charitable trust will return the management of the hall to the community, helping to preserve its history and ensure it remains a central gathering place for the Ātaahua community. It will strengthen social bonds, encourage recreation, and provide a welcoming space for people to come together and connect. The trust has also been structured to serve as an umbrella organisation, if needed, for other projects within the Ātaahua Community Trust's region of interest.
